GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The Arts Society Bowdon is an autonomous society affiliated to The Arts Society, an international organisation based in London.
The Society meets at the Bowdon Rooms, The Firs, Bowdon, WA14 2TQ at 1.45 pm. on the third Monday of each month from September to June, for illustrated talks given by lecturers of national and international standing on a wide variety of subjects related to the arts, with an emphasis on fine art.
The Bowdon Society is now in its 41st year. We have a tradition of having one or two Guest Events each year; last year we celebrated our Ruby Anniversary with a special Society lunch and lecture and as this proved so popular with the members and their guests we are expecting to repeat the event this year.
The Society usually organises two one-day visits each year to places of interest to members and occasional visits of several days to places further away in the autumn. The dates and venues of the day visits for 2023 will be announced later in the year. The four-day visits in the past have been in the UK or abroad. Such a visit to the south of England took place in October 2021 and included a performance at Glyndebourne of the Donezetti opera Don Pasquale. It was not possible to arrange such a trip in 2022 but it is hoped to promote another such visit in 2023.
The Society also undertakes voluntary restoration work, currently conservation work on the library at Tabley House, church recording, currently at Hale Chapel and St. James’ Church, Gatley and sponsors educational work in schools and colleges. We also recently set up a Heritage Trail of Bowdon and expect to establish more trails in the local area in the coming years. You can see more about the Society’s activities at www.bowdon.theartssociety.org.
The Membership Fee for the year is £45.
